Keep 2. If you drop a player you cannot select that player in the first round of the draft the next year. This prevents the person who finishes in last place from dropping peyton manning to keep 2 up and comers then picking Peyton with the first pick.
I think you should be able to keep for longer than that.

Can I ask if we can draw the draft order before the draft?

but more importantly with keeper leagues, u should b allowed to keep them for like 2-3 years if u want but u normally have to have a contract with them so we gotta figure tht part out. like if we had an auction draft u can keep them at double the points u got him for the previous years auction. with a draft idk, do u lose ur 1st rounder? i dont think its fair to have the ability to keep chris johnson and some1 else and be able to keep ur 1st rounder. i think maybe we can do a value system like if u sign him for 2 years u gotta give up ur 1st, 1 year give up a 2nd but only 1year and u cant hold on to him again? idk but theres gotta b some drawback and some risk here.
and then we can also do the worst place gets 1st pick n u can trade with them in the offseason idk. wat u guys think?
ill do whatever we decide on but honestly i have liked our league the past few years. i mean what if someone drops out of a keeper league how does that work?
i eat sleep and breathe football, i mean i just read a long article on kevin kolb the qb of my division rival because i can't get enough football talk, but i dont think we really need to church it up so much.
our league the past few years has been really fun.
what are normal keeper league rules like? we should just go with what most other leagues do.
you keep 2 players from each year. you can keep a guy for 3 years at which point he goes back into the draft. draft the following year can still be random and you gotta choose your keepers before the draft order is selected. that way everyone will keep their best players cause theres no guarentee you will have a chance to pick someone back up, simple as that...
ignore my above post about not being able to draft someone you dropped in the first round cause with a random order everyone (or at least the ppl selecting before you) has a chance to draft any of your dropped players
fish just wants to be a GM of an NFL franchise but all I wanna do is play some fantasy football. I mean I totally understand where hes comin from because it would be fun to have something that takes up more time and is more in depth, but honestly our league is so fun I really don't see the need to change it.
I like having a clean slate every year because it evens the playing field every year. Fresh start. What if your keeper players tear their ACL in training camp? You are at a major disadvantage due to a freak accident.
yea im starting to lean away from a keeper too... if we were thinking about doing an auction so everyone has a shot at CJ2K, AP, etc. the keeper leauge is kinda the opposite of that since good players will be locked up for 3 years
i mean if u want to play the same way since uve been playing since u were 10 then fine well keep it. the reason ppl change rules is cuz it makes it more fun, which is y the nfl changes ot rules, which is y madden keeps changings things. ya this is the safe way but i think if u gave something new a chance u might find u like it better. i mean lets b serious our fantasy league only last like 14 weeks. we have the draft a few days before week 1, and then playoffs start week 14 where most ppl r out or about to be out. if we did a keeper, we have all offseason to figure out wat we want to do with our guys, how long u want them, maybe trade them? n u get to hold on to them its almost like there ur guys.
forster, other than erm (who i kicked out n never shoulda been in in the 1st place), weve had the same 9 ppl in our league for 4 years now n i dont see any1 not wanted to play fantasy anymore or losing interest in football anytime soon so i dont see some1 dropping out. and if they did we would just go back to a simple league like we have now.
i no i keep harping on this, but the typical way to do a keeper league is an auction draft n then the next offseason u can keep either 2 or 3 players for double wat u paid. so if u got chris johnson this year for 30 points, u can keep hiom next year but then next years auction u already spent 60 on him so tht might mess up the rest of ur team. its real good when u get a rookie for like 5 points n he blows up n u get to keep him for 10. smart drafting
until chris johnson tears his ACL and you have 60 points invested in him and then your absolutely ****ed.
fish im not sayin it wouldnt be fun, i'm just sayin i already have fun so im just not as worried about changing things as you are. danny might be deployed next year so who knows if hell be able to play?
like i said im down with whatever and i dont wanna be a dick about this so whatever gets decided im down with. i just like it the way it is, thats just my opinion tho.
I agree with Forster. I know my opinion doesnt matter at all but im just saying. It just sounds like to me that you are the only one worried about it. I like it how it is. It seems like you are trying to make it more of a job than a fun thing to do with your boys. I dont want to spend 10hours a week on Fantasy football especially since i cant get on it at work.

ur right, i do want a more in depth league i think ive made tht pretty obvious the past few months. ive been following football since i was 8 n i read articles every single day so to be honest i dont want to be in a league where a portion of the ppl dont pick up players n to be honest its a league where a 10 year old can do or win if they get lucky in the draft. and im not talkin simply about having the 1st pick. im talking about printing out espn top 200 n then picking the best player avialbe n thts how u have ur team.
to b honest if it wasnt for the stories n the fact were all friends i wouldnt want to do this league, my brother is in a competive keeper league where every1 is real involved n i feel like 80% of us no a little something about football to make this work but no1 wants to put any effort into something other than a minor roster update once a week.
im hopin instead of thinkin im tryin to stir **** up n make things difficult, some1 agrees with me n says ya, maybe we should try something different n have fun with it rather than doing the exact same thing every year where nobody can remember who even won the championship last year
as much as i hate the way fish is handling the situation "wahh its my rules or i dont want to play wahh," hes right. we are doing the bare minimum as far as fantasy football is concerned and i think we would all be fine stepping it up a notch
fish I am obsessed with football too and I see your point but even if you know everything about football there is still a lot of luck involved. I took the number 1 seed from you last year in the final week of the season and if I hadn't have done that I would have won the championship. Yes I was that mad that I went back and checked that after I was eliminated.
If you wanted to eliminate luck from fantasy football all together you wouldn't have week to week matchups. You would simply play out the entire season including playoffs and the person whose team put up the most points at the end of the season would win the championship.
i understand what you are saying and its whatever everybody wants to do.....i really dont care. But if you that way y dont you join another league that is way more in depth and play in both. That way you can have fun with your boys and also get off to your in depth league too. just 2 more of my cents

theres luck in everything, im not going to say if we did things differently this year then all luck it out of the equation. read this section from my man bill simmons and see if u start to see things differently:
Recommendation No. 2: Everyone switches to an auction format Why? Because nobody in the history of mankind has ever NOT had fun during an auction. Because it spares us from the missionary-position feel of a round-by-round draft; auctions can go in any direction. (You never know who might run out of money too soon, you never know which bargains will be lurking at the end and you can't predict anyone else's game plan. In a round-by-round draft, I can see who's picking No. 2 and guess "He's going to do this, this and this" and probably be right. In an auction? No way.) Because simmering tensions can bubble to the surface, usually when two dudes who secretly don't like each other suddenly get into a rooster-swinging contest over some random QB. Because nothing's more fun than bidding someone else up, and nothing's less fun than getting stuck with that player if the other owner backs off. Because it's always fun to make fun of the one guy who outsmarted himself and got stuck with $20-$25 he can't use. And best of all, because someone like Chris Johnson goes to the highest bidder instead of someone who just lucked out by pulling an ace from a deck of cards.
(Put it this way: I have never, not once, talked to someone who did a fantasy auction, then decided afterward, "Nahhhhh, I still like round-by-round more." Also, some leagues have an auction until every team acquires eight or 10 players, then they go round-by-round after that. Or, as I'd like to christen this idea right now, "The Surf and Turf." I like this wrinkle. Best of both worlds.)
Recommendation No. 3: Keepers. You get more attached to keepers. They become YOUR guys. (See the Santana sidebar above.) In fantasy football, you never get attached for more than four months. I've heard some quality round-by-round keeper ideas that I'm not passing along because, again, round-by-round drafts are for unimaginative, stubborn wimps. For auction keepers, here's what I recommend: Keep up to four players per season; keep any player for up to four years; anyone you drafted in 2010 can be kept for an extra $10 in 2011, then you have the right to sign them for TWO extra years for $15 more (Year 3) and another $5 (Year 4). But you have to decide after Year 2 whether you're giving him two more years or letting him go.
For example, let's say you drafted Miles Austin for $1 last year. You get him for $11 in 2010. That's done. After 2010, you can either let him go or sign him for two more years ($26 in Year 3, $31 in Year 4.) But here's the catch: Let's say he gets hurt in Year 3, goes in the tank, whatever. You're stuck with him in Year 4. You signed him to a two-year deal! Even if you waive him, that $31 stays on your cap. So really, you're dealing with the same cap risks as a real NFL team. I love this idea. Personally, I wouldn't keep anyone past that second year unless I struck gold with someone like Peterson … but you never know.
Here's where that keeper wrinkle goes to another level: Let's say I steal Ben Tate for $6 because everyone else runs out of money. Tate goes bonkers in Houston and passes 1,000 rushing yards by Week 8. I'm fighting for the title with two other owners and need to swing a blockbuster deal for a stud QB because my Matt Leinart/Jay Cutler combo isn't quite cutting it. My buddy Sal (1-7 and headed for last place) has Brees and Rice, so I offer him Tate and Cutler for Brees and Rice. For me, Rice matches Tate's numbers and I get the massive Brees upgrade. For Sal, he gets a fantastic keeper (Tate at $16 in 2011). Everyone wins. Any idea that promotes continuity, encourages trading and/or keeps crappy fantasy owners engaged is a good one … right?
(P.S.: You know how it's sneaky-boring to hear about any fantasy trade someone else made? Tell me you weren't riveted by that Tate/Cutler for Brees/Rice trade scenario. All that thing needed was Adam Schefter reporting it. That reminds me … )
i vote for the keeper league too but the bill simmons article was unnecessary... good luck trying to get motz to read that whole thing. and i quote from Sunday night "i will never read a book in my life" hahaha
sounds to me like we need a poll.. also nick i wasnt sayin we should switch to that total points format i dont even think it exists i just meant in terms of eliminating luck
1. keep it the way it is aka simple unimaginative wimp way 2. keep it the way it is, with an auction draft 3. auction draft, keeper league bill simmons rules
im really tryin to figure out why ppl wouldnt want to do it the way bill simmons described? i dont think its complicated at all, and it sounds 10 times more fun than wat we do.
motz i no ur really the only 1 who is not tht into it but it really isnt difficult, and other than the draft style its the same thing u've been doing. its a keeper league n u dont have to hold on to any1 if u dont want, so just dont hold on to any1 n u can start ur team from scrath every year like weve been doing.
