I just read this and remember how kearns would always read his theories and thought this was funny haha
I once read about five monkeys that were placed in a room with a banana at the top of a set of stairs. As one monkey attempted to climb the stairs, all of the monkeys were sprayed with jets of cold water. A second monkey made an attempt and again the monkeys were sprayed. No more monkeys attempted to climb the stairs. One of the monkeys was then removed from the room and replaced with a new monkey. New monkey saw the banana and started to climb the stairs but to its surprise, it was attacked by the other monkeys. Another of the original monkeys was replaced and the newcomer was also attacked when he attempted to climb the stairs. The previous newcomer took part in the punishment with enthusiasm. Replacing a third original monkey with a new one, it headed for the stairs and was attacked as well. Half of the monkeys that attacked him had no idea why. After replacing the fourth and fifth original monkeys, none had ever been sprayed with cold water but all stayed the **** away from the stairs.
long but amazing. basically elon musk (founder of paypal and owner of Tesla) wants to put 1million people on mars to ensure that the human race doesnt become extinct because of immediate (asteroids) or long term (world wars/no more resources) apocalypse and has a pretty convincing plan to start the colony by 2025 and sustain forever. a couple points:
- instead of funding all 1m peoples travel he wants to reduce the cost of sending people into space to $500,000. although it sounds like a lot, and he will offer free return flights, its not out of the ordinary to think people would sell all their stuff and spend their life savings to do it, similar to the settlers who came to america. US currency would be no good for the first generation of people and resources would be sent long before the first group of people so no need to buy anything once there.
- his company spaceX already sent several rockets into space and is one of only 2 private companies to do it. in order to make money on this insane idea he was already able to reduce the cost of sending rockets up there to 1/3 of what NASA pays. because of this he got contracts with NASA to carry satellites and supplies to the US space station at a fraction of the cost, funding his program and making his test rockets free.
- colonizing mars is actually easier than you would think and although no one could live in the conditions without a space suit for the first few decades, they could lose everything but the helmet between 30-a few hundred years, at which point plants would have produced enough oxygen for humans to breathe. thats really the only challenge scientists haven't expedited yet.
- his ultimate goal, which he will obviously never see, is to continue the growth to several planets inside our solar system and allow people to travel between them. instead of living in different countries you could visit different planets.
its hard to wrap your head around but he article really does a great job of breaking it down and explaining why its possible, and in our lifetime. the article is extremely long so skip parts if you want, i didnt but it took me 3 sessions to finish, or dont read it at all but its absolutely mindblowing. i can prolly answer most of the questions if tl;dr and your interested.
tesla is one of the best companies in america so was reading up on their recent stuff and came across spaceX which is the CEOs other company.
the author of that article is a pretty awesome writer too, theres another one about exactly why we havent yet communicated with aliens and one about why we have already spent about 95% of the time with our immediate family that we will spend with them during our entire lifetime, at 30.
i immediately thought of this thread last night haha.
you're much more well rounded than you look! I had no idea you were into all this stuff, but that's a good point about being with your family 95% of your life by 30, for me it was probably even younger. obviously from when your born to 18 most people are with them 100% of their lives, and then college it starts going down. post college, I obviously moved away and for a few years for me I didn't go home as much and saw them maybe like 5-8 weekends per year, but now with allie and they have a beach house it is probably closer to 10 weekends per year. but yea 20-25 days out of 365 is 5% per year.
