i know you guys are wondering how my bracket is holding up so im here to tell its doing pretty well. not as well as after the 1st round when i nailed multiple upsets such as SF Austin over VCU, Dayton over Ohio State (and Cuse!), and finally No. Dakota State over Ok, but still in top 3 of pauls pool and will most likely will win if florida wins it all.
some notes from the weekend:
- kentucky over witchia state was the best game of the weekend and in my opinion the tourney thus far. a lot of big shots and high level dunks by both teams and this is the team people expected kentucky to be when they were ranked preseason as #1. they have all the talent to do it but its never consistent with them which is why i didnt expect them to beat a good expirence witchia state team. them vs lville is gonna be a good one, but i think the favorite in that bracket is michigan, they have looked dominate in their 2 games so far.
- some other great games: dayton over cuse, iowa state over UNC (terrible ending tho), wiscon over oregon.
- cinderalla so far is dayton and they got a good drawl in the sweet 16 playing stanford. imagine beating ohio state and cuse, 2 teams ranked pretty highly all year, and then losing vs stanford haha.
- keep it up florida, the $ is nice and all if you guys help me win the bracket, but bragging rights over nick for a year is priceless!
also a lot of top nba prospects are already out of the tourney after the 1st 2 rounds. other than kentucky and esp juluis randle and i cant think of another 10 top pick still in the toruney.
some great games over the weekend. i thought the 2 best were wisc over arizona and kentucky over michigan. as ive been telling nick for months now, these freshman at kentucky can play and they really stepped up last night in some clutch moments. randle is an absolutle beast and that game vs wisconsin is gonna be fun. florida at uconn will also be interesting. its crazy that florida has only lost twice this year and both of them are in the final 4 (uconn and wisc). does that mean this is one of the greatest seasons in a long time or that they cant beat a good team? im just kidding, this is florida's title to lose, but i would be very intersted to see a kentucky FL national championship game, that would be intense.
i know you both have been dieing to find out about the results of the bracket pool and even before the final 4 starts i can announce your boy, Mr. Mark Fischer, has won it all. while the $400 cash prize is nice, the the feeling of having college bball bragging rights for an entire year that really has me exicted. so from now until march 2015, anything you guys need to know about college bball just post right here or send me a text n ill have an answer for you within 24 hours.
how do you guys feel about uconn winning it all? they deserved to win since they lead the entire game and were clearly the hottest team in the tourney the past month by beating teams like florida, mich st and then kentucky but i have a weird feeling about them being the national champs and going down in the history books like this. they were barley ranked the entire season and even lost to louville by 30 something not too long ago (conference tourney maybe). idk, when i think national champs i want that team to at least be one of the better college teams for that entire season such as florida, az, louville, etc, not a team like uconn that won nothing the entire year, barley got by round 1 and then got extremely hot and went on a tear.
i feel like kentucky is a more well rounded team and at points last night it was 5 on 2... harrison twins, randle, young and ploy... are all great players and contributors vs the PGs of uconn. BUT uconn beat everyone they had to so im ok with them winning it all.
its not just MM but all playoffs where the best teams is never as good as the hot team. the ravens were like 9-7 two years ago and got hot and won the superbowl. this is especially true in march madness. if they had best-of-seven series or even double elimination it would sort itself out but its not as fun that way.
would it have been better if witchia st won? they were undefeated but had like the 180th schedule against.
well if witchita state won it all that would have meant they went undefeated all year and then beaten good teams in the tourney like kentucky, lville, and michgian plus whoever in the final 4 so yes, i would say that makes them a worthy champ. i guess you could say the same thing about uconn by being the only team to beat florida twice this season plus their big wins in the tourney.
i guess NFL is different for me than MM because in football playoffs you still have to beat at least 3 really good teams like the ravens did in beating denver, NE and then san fran and a lot of times lower seeds in football just meant they had injuries early in the year which costs them some games. in MM if you were a lower seed it normally means you weren't that good the entire year.
like i said, uconn deserved the title, they beat some very good teams, its just going to feel weird remembering them as national champs, i cant remember the last time a 20 person pool didnt have 1 person even picking the eventual national champs to reach the elite 8.
is this true that jameis has been suspended for the first half against a good clemson team for yelling "f*ck her right in the pu**y" in the middle of campus?? lllmmaaaoooooooooo
no wonder why so many longhorns are getting suspended for drug use!
According to data the newspaper acquired through an open records request, Texas drug tested every player after spring break in March. Players who were considered at-risk were then subject more frequent testing.
I am really liking this college football season so far with the playoffs, but if people think there is going to be less controversy at the end of the year because the BCS is gone they are crazy. with only 4 teams getting in, the huge debate is going to be for who is #5-6 instead of #3, and it is even more subjective with a committee who seemly changes the way they rank teams week by week. one week it is strength of schedule that matters and the next is how they look vs a lesser opponent which will probably costs TCU this week. here is my top 5 for right:
1. Oregon
2. Bama
3. FSU
4. Miss State
Outside looking in
5. TCU
just imagine what happens if say aurburn beats bama in a few weeks (or if they loss in the SEC game) and then there's gonna be multiple teams with 1-2 losses all in the 2-6 range. it's going to be crazy
should be interesting. like you said they just switched the onus from the 2 seed to the 5 seed. BUT its much easier to tell a 1-2 loss team that they are outside the playoff than it is to tell an undefeated team that they are not in the BCS championship.
gonna be a great 2 weeks and an even better bowl season
As I assume you guys are aware the Ohio State QB JT Barrett broke his ankle on Saturday, so his replacement is Cardale Jones. Jones posted this on twitter his freshman year at Ohio State.
"Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS."
also, does anyone else think the SEC might be a little overrated? I agree Alabama is the best team in the country, but after that I dunnoooo. the reason I say that is because the reason the SEC is so hyped up is because their teams are always ranked very high in the beginning of the year, so when a #6 ranked LSU plays #15 miss st in week 3 and miss state wins they go way up in the rankings and then the SEC team that losses never really drops much. so you consistently have these highly ranked teams losing and never really getting penalized where a team in the Big 12 losses they might drop 10-15 spots, which is also why these SEC teams win so many "big games" because they are always ranked in the top 10 even if they lose 2 games. after bama I don't know who the 2nd best team in the SEC is, but the difference between ole miss, miss state or even auburn isn't much of a difference if they played TCU, Baylor or Oklahoma.
florida just signed Jim McElwain from Colorado state. I like how they went from attempting to get chip Kelly who is probably a top 2 college coach and top 5-8 NFL coach, to this guy haha.
nick, break down this hire for me I'm not too familiar with McElwain's body of work. think he will be a good fit in the SEC east?
Nebraska just hired Mike Riley from Oregon State. No not Oregon, Oregon State who just finished 5-7 this season and lost 47-19 last week. nick break this one down for me, is he a good fit in the big 10?
Miami had announced in September that Olsen, a redshirt freshman, was no longer enrolled in school following his third different suspension from the football program, as he had been charged with driving under the influence and having a fake or stolen driver's license.
looks like he will fit right into Towson! glad to have him on board.

said this on December 1st, before any of the bowls started obviously. I know I'm not one to brag...wait a minute, I love to brag! anyway, here are the results of the SEC since I posted the comment above:
1. Alabama LOSS
7. Miss State LOSS
9. Ole Miss LOSS
13. Georgia WIN
16. Mizzouri WIN
19. Aurburn LOSS
23. LSU LOSS
UR. Texas AM WIN
UR. South Carolina WIN
So that's 4-5 overall from them but 0-3 with their top 10 teams and 2-5 in the top 25 which was my point from a month ago. SEC was def overrated this season.
every year we see crazy upsets with 99% of sports fans wondering how the hell that just happened and then we hear stories about how some crazy women in Iowa picked that 15 seed to make it to the sweet 16 due to the jersey color so I decided last night I needed to try out that strategy. since I actually follow sports, I pulled out my secret weapon... my GF. she has never filled out a bracket until last night, so after a few glasses of wine and bong rips I knew it was time to give it a shot. she had no idea what "a bracket" meant until I explained it to her multiple times and after many "this is taking too long" complaints I finally got her to finish one. here were some of her finer picks:
Final 4:
- Kentucky (this was a close call. she almost had Purdue beating them in round 2 because she liked Perdue chicken more than KFC. i normally wouldn't change her picks but i made sure she was aware Kentucky was undefeated).
- Xavier (she liked saying X to the Z which made her want them to keep them winning)
- Mich State
- Georgetown
She had a lot of other upsets but the big one to watch out for is 15 seed New Mexico State getting into the sweet 16 including wins over #2 Kansas and #7 Wichita state.
let's see what happens. u guys have your final 4 set yet?
not feeling confident at all about my bracket, but here goes my final 4:
Kentucky (winning it all)
Arizona
Lville
Duke
my office is also having a work thing and each person was assigned to a team and if that teams win we get a weekend vacation at some resort. My team is Dayton, so lets go FLYERS!
after a brutal day 1 I rebounded nicely and am currently #2 in the office pool and am the only one with all 4 final 4 teams remaining. the Lville pick is making me a little nervous with mich st playing so well, but I guess we'll see what happens there. so far its looking like this:
11/16 sweet 16 teams alive
7/8 elite 8 teams still alive
4/4 final four teams.
my gf who has now watched her first college bball game in her life, and by "watched" I mean one of the following: at the bar talking to her friends/cooking dinner/sleeping on my lap, has a pretty impressive bracket going as well but picking Georgetown for the final 4 really hurt.
bold prediction: Kentucky's coach cal with be the okc thunder's head coach next year.
why you ask? ok here is my theory: rumors came out yesterday that Cal wants back in the NBA. he failed there years ago with the nets but inside sources have said he wants back in to prove everyone wrong and he felt he wasn't ready for the NBA at that time but now he is. if he goes undefeated with Kentucky this year and wins his 2nd national championship, what else is there for him to prove on the college level? Nothing. so the only logically move would be to go to the NBA, but he's not going to join a rebuilding team so where does he go? Umm how about the under performing OKC team who now desperately needs to make a big move in order to keep Durant there (1 year left on his contract) and westbrook (2 year left) so they need to do something big. the biggest thing they can do is add a big name coach, so with Cal getting the opportunity to coach 2 of the 5 best players in the league, this makes the most sense for him to jump from Kentucky to the NBA and get a good team.
the only thing that worries me about this is if the thunder are willing to pay the $ to get Cal but will the chance of losing Durant after next year I think they go for it.
i agree he will go somewhre, maybe even the thunder.
im not so sure KD has much chance of staying, and it may be mutual. westbrook is a star and a number 1. if they bring in someone like kevin love next offseason he could be even better with someone in a supporting role and not taking so many shots, as good as durant is. durant is also a #1 and lets not forget they dont exactly play well together.
also, i think durants foot may be a bigger deal than anyone is letting on. they say hes out indefinately, which means most likely until the playoffs, probably through the end of the season and maybe even into next year. are they gonna pay a ton of money to resign him coming off an injury that is apparently very recurring? especially if they wont have him until christmas?
and that doesnt even take into account durant may want to leave OKC.
i could see them signing a player or 2 as a compliment to westbrook this offseason and letting KD walk or at least play out his contract then reevaluate.
they are either maxed out on the salary cap or very close to it, they wont have the ability to just go out an sign someone this isn't the NFL where you can just cut a guy either and get the cap space.
no chance in the hell they let Durant walk without doing everything they can to keep him. the only way the thunder would be ok with him leaving is IF this foot injury is much worse then they are letting on and they think his career is in jeopardy going forward but that is a very small chance. he is most likely out for this season but he should be fine for next. the guy is like 26 and was the MVP last year, you don't give up on him because Westbrook has had a nice month or 2 of good stats. thunder need to get a top notch coach like the warriors did going from mark Jackson to steve kerr and then that will put them in a better position to win a championship which will make Durant want to stay which is why I feel the thunder need to do something like that.
great tourney. congrats on your win in pauls bracket nick, however after filling out between 5-10 brackets you became the first person to lose money even after winning it. a little disappointing to not see Kentucky in the final game after the season they had, but that's the nature of the one and done format. I always like to see a "deserving" team win it all, and Kentucky, duke, and wisc were clearly the best 3 teams all season so its fine to me that duke was the one to win it all. now that the season is over its time to get serious about what's really important, the NBA draft. as a 76ers fan I truly have no idea who I want more. you could talk me into any of the top 4 prospects and I wouldn't even mind winslow if it came down to it. as of now here is what I want to see (assuming 76ers win the lottery)
1. okafor. put him with embidd and that is a dominant young front court that will be able to score and hopefully control the paint with noel coming off the bench (if they were to keep all 3)
2. towns. this would be the most devastating defensive combo out there, so can't go wrong with that. I think towns could potentially be the #1 overall pick as well because of that.
3. Russell. the 76ers currently have no guards on their roster that I have ever heard of, so having a young scorer would obviously really help.
4. winslow. he really impressed me this tourney, and with his size and the ability to drive and shoot I think he can develop into a really nice wing player as long as he's not the main focus on the team.
5. munday. don't know too much about him due to him playing in china but everything I read is that he is 6'4 with great explosion and was supposed to be the #1 guard out of high school this year. guess we'll see what his work outs look like for the pre-draft stuff. he could be the one with the most potential to move up in the draft.
i think towns is better than okafor and i think okafor hurt his stock quite a bit yesterday. he made a couple nice plays but he went on like a 20 minute scoring drought, in foul trouble or not, couldnt stop kaminsky without fouling and is a complete liability in free throws himself. i liked okafor a lot more before last night.
winslows gonna be a beast. heard him compared to james harden last night. although some of those blocking fouls were obvious charges, the refs bailed him out since he had 3 early.
grayson allen my new favorite 2016 ncaa player as of now.
will be interesting to see where kaminsky goes. hes a nowinski/gasol hybrid and not only because hes a big goofy white forigner. graceful in the paint and a great 3 point shooter.

haha I'm not gonna even bother to read this. chips not getting fired after 1 year of having GM powers and I highly doubt he would quit after getting all the power last offseason. all the philly beat reporters say he wants to stay in the NFL so I doubt he would leave on his own either. however, if he did he's not going to MD, a more realistic place would be Texas who would pay him probably more than he gets now.
