simmons has been at espn for 15 years and PTI has been around for about the same time but wilbon didn't go there full time for a while (he was still writing for Washington post at the time).  I read something not too long ago he was making about 1.5-2 mil a year but not sure how accurate that is.

if I had to bet I would say simmons makes a lot more, he ran Grantland, has the 2 of the top 3 sports podcasts, did a lot for 30 for 30, plus did a lot of TV work where wilbon is more a TV guy and writes articles for ESPN Chicago.

apparently there was an old school biker gang brawl at a bar in texas over the weekend. 192 people were arrested, 9 dead and 18 injured. the fighting escalated from "brass knuckles to chains to knives to guns"

when police arrived they switched their attention from the other gangs (there were 5) to the police and started shooting it out with them too.

i imagine this somewhere between an old wild west brawl and aaron hernandez outside of the nightclub. i didnt know these gangs still went this hard this is an awesome story.

I also heard the bar they were at doing these meetings at is not cooperating at all with the cops.  makes me think they got some type of fee from these gangs to set up the meetings.  this reminds me of the true detective scene where they had to go through 2 back doors to get to the real action and buy some drugs!

so a local guy had his $30,000 magic the gathering card stolen over the weekend. the police setup a huge sting to catch the guys who stole this card and others

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/local/wp/2015/06/10/revenge-of-the-nerds-magic-the-gathering-thief-caught-in-elaborate-trap/

cool story, nerd! but, when i went to bar-t-ranch camp back in 1997 i was introduced to the game. i ended up buying a couple hundred cards. i was never really that great at it and it was never really a big deal to me. after the summer was over i put them in a box in the shed and havent thought about them for the last 18 years.

the real story here is the price of the guys card. $30,000! and the fact that i have hundreds of these things from so long ago means that some of them HAVE to be worth money. the only card i can definitively say i remember because i liked the graphic so much was 'berzerk.' that card is going for $300 on the website a guy at work showed me you can sell them.

good start! daddy needs a new pair of shoes, and some vegas money!

anyone else remember/have them? josh im looking at you :)

Caught me red handed... Oh yeah I was into Magic, about the same level as you were. Couldn't even tell you where my cards wound up... I was not very good either

when I first heard this story yesterday I didn't think it was a big deal because boxers typically hold multiple titles in different weight classes, organizations, etc, but maybe this is different so idk.  Floyd and his people don't seem too concerned tho:

"It's a complete disgrace," Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN.com. "Floyd will decide what, or if any, actions he will take. But in the meantime he's enjoying a couple of hundred million he made from his last outing and this has zero impact on anything he does."

i mean yeah he gets to keep his money but he got the belt stipped. sure it wouldnt be a big deal if he was stripped of an old phantom weight belt but this was supposed to be the event to save boxing. now even that it tainted (albeit by a technicallity)

getting back to mayweather, maybe he did this intentionally?  does he need the belt for anything?  maybe he just wanted to save the 200k haha

Teddy Atlas doesn't think Floyd Mayweather needs the WBO belt: "He is called 'Money' Mayweather. If you can save money, it speaks to his name. It speaks to obviously the way he does business."

and he doesnt seem all that happy about it...

"It's a complete disgrace," Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN. "Floyd Mayweather has a great deal of respect for each and every organization, as he has always had in his 19-year career, but he will not be dictated to by any organization or person as it relates to his decision making."

translation: wahhhh the rules shouldnt apply to me

not sure how much ESPN radio or podcast you guys listen to but ESPN is parting ways with another big name, Colin Cowherd.  I wasn't a huge fan of his, but during lunch every once in awhile I would listen to him for 30 min or I would listen to a podcast if I had nothing else, but regardless, this is pretty surprising.  over the last 2 months espn has gotten rid of bill simmons, keith olberman and now cowherd all very big names and big egos/personalities.

PLEASE tell me skip bayless is next!

wasn't dumb at all. the devon still speech was fantastic. gronks acceptance speech classic. every big name in the building to either present or win. was really really well done.

i had no interest in the caitlyn jenner part but like it or not its a huge deal and he was an olympic gold medalist.

he was a gold medalist 40 years ago, only reason its a big deal now is because of the relationship to the kardashians.

I knew the website he was supposed to run, The undefeated aka the black version of grantland, he was fired from awhile ago and caught a lot of criticism for that, but no I did not know about this news until the articles you posted.  pretty surprising but hes not a good fit for espn.  I really liked whitlock when he wrote for foxsports.com but I couldn't even find him on espn.com.  I do like his work on tv, I like him a lot on PTI and he did inside the nfl for a few segments a few years ago and he's really good in that format.  like you said, i'll miss him on PTI but hopefully he goes to a website that promotes him more and has a good debate style tv show for him.

also, how about Stephen A Smiths comments about kevin Durant yesterday?  are you frigging kidding me, you're gonna threaten a big time professional athlete like that?  I'm sure KD is shaking in his shoes right now, oh god what is that clown show from 1st take going to do to his reputation, make up some more rumors that no1 believes or respects?  SAS is a joke.

i dunno man, whitlock can get pretty touchy on the race stuff when he doesnt have someone like ESPN to reel him in. i actually liked him better at espn than fox. prolly best he didnt get the job at a black-race-centered website. whats up with that anyways? race is such a hot topic but its cool for the "black centric" sites to be created in one of the biggest sports outlets on the planet? imagine if they created a "white centric" espn website that only ran articles about white NBA and NFL players all day. it would be an outrage...

SAS is an idiot just like his boy skip.

so its all pretty tame, especially towards deadspin and espn. however, it looks like this is just an introduction and the bullets may fly on air beginning with his appearance on the colin cowherd show this afternoon. if youre looking for juiciness, this is about as juicy as it gets in this post:

Why did I fail at The Undefeated? There are numerous reasons, including my foolish belief I could manage like a football coach. I learned there’s an art to corporate politics that I’m not good at. Another part of the answer is quite simple and rather obvious: 1) ESPN is cost-cutting, undergoing a significant cultural shift that has led to the departures of Bill Simmons, Colin Cowherd, Keith Olbermann and yours truly; 2) If you believe the 2014 reporting of Robert Lipsyte, ESPN’s in-house ombudsman at the time, key ESPN executives disagreed with my vision to build a site as ambitious and well-funded as Grantland and FiveThirtyEight. The analysis of race and culture is far more difficult than the analysis of movies, burritos and numbers.

part 2

http://j.school/post/131171799725/the-explanation-20-silence-is-not-always-golden#_=_

again, still have not read it but I heard nothing special.  I did read an article summarizing his segment today with cowherd and apparently it was a dud.  cowherd was trying to get him to name names or give him anything and for whatever reason whitlock wouldn't.  forget big sexy, so far this has been nothing but the "big letdown."

I was listening to a podcast last night and they were talking about how perplexed they are with how the NFL handled the whole deflategate thing.  the topic then came to why the NFL tried to make tom brady look bad, and they brought how the NFL was using the media to win the PR battle and leak things early.  they then talked about how the NFL leaked that tom brady destroyed his cell phone and if you remember it was Stephen A Smith of all people who would be the one to break that news.  so who would be the one to tell SAS and not someone who reports actually news like Mort or Adam?  Well lets see, who is pretty high up in the NFL front office that would have this kind of info before anyone else?

one candidate is troy Vincent, currently the NFL executive vice president of football operations. And where did he play most of his NFL career?  with the Philadelphia eagles from '96-'03. and where did SAS smith work during that time? the Philadelphia Inquirer from '94-'07.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Lamar Odom has not gotten any better, and sources familiar with his treatment say even if he survives he has virtually no chance of ever leading a normal life.

Our sources say doctors continue to put Lamar's chances of survival at 50/50. We're told he showed "absolutely no improvement" Thursday from the condition he was in when he was admitted to the hospital Tuesday. As one person put it, "He's in dire straits."

One of the big issues is Lamar's apparent consumption of cocaine and an herbal substitute for Viagra, which is a potentially deadly combination.

We're told he was "entirely unresponsive" all day Thursday and 4 vital organs are still failing, with no signs of improvement. Lamar is not breathing on his own and his doctors believe his brain function is significantly reduced.

We're told the Kardashian family has flown in several specialists from L.A. to consult with Vegas doctors.

One source said there are comparisons to the plight of Bobbi Kristina, with one big difference. We're told Lamar did not lose oxygen to the brain for nearly as long as Bobbi Kristina, which offers some sliver of hope.

Doctors have told the family for each day that passes without improvement, the prognosis gets bleaker.
