Seeking comments on whether we should dump comments

113879440_20120529120725_320_240Getty Images

At some point in the past decade, it became a given that websites must churn page views by giving readers the ability to post comments.

Rarely, if ever, did anyone stop and ask whether it made sense to give a voice to everyone who wants one.

As a practical matter, a very small percentage of readers comments on stories. Even our most reaction-provoking stories provoke a miniscule portion of the readership to articulate a response. And some of the responses aren’t very articulate.

In turn, the process of clearing comments has become a headache, with plenty of comments not adding to the conversation and plenty of inappropriate comments slipping through the cracks and plenty of readers sending in emails to complain about their own comments being dumped.

We’re now at the point where we’re at least willing to ask whether it’s worth it to continue to have a comments section. What better way to resolve that question that to ask for comments on whether we should continue to allow comments?

For those of you who prefer not to comment but merely to click, feel free to cast a vote in the poll.

Should we keep or dump reader comments?
Keep them.
Dump them.
No opinion.

its gotta only be regular season cause troys pick 6 in the AFCC game vs flacco was my favorite play of all time. plus harrisons 100 yard int return with no time left in the SB vs cardinals

the marshawn lynch beast mode run vs the saints was the 1st round of the playoffs and the immaculate reception was in the afc playoffs as well so that doesnt make much sense.

jacksons PR should easily beat polamalu tackle.  there has never been a walk off punt return td ever and that capped off one of the biggest and craizest comebacks in nfl history, and oh ya, it won them the division.  the tackle was great and all but it happened on 1st down in a 19-3 game with less than 2 minutes left meaning that play had little to no impact on the game.

i still dont get why the d-bo return wasnt there then. it was a 14 point swing in a 4 point super bowl and the longest play in supwer bowl history. troy also made the same play on 3-1 in a playoff game against the ravens that forced a missed FG but a week 1 game against the titans made it. ive seen polamalu make 10 plays better than that one.

the lynch run gets my vote. that was awesome

stupid contest

As per PFT... Their current All-Unemployed team... it really aint too bad.

Quarterback: Byron Leftwich.

The Seahawks’ move for Brady Quinn made a lot of sense — he was probably the best backup option left. Leftwich has a strong arm and plenty of experience but has struggled to stay healthy.

Down the road, Tim Tebow seems a solid bet to join the jobless QB ranks, and the moment he does, he becomes the X-factor of the group. Will another team give him a chance?

Running back: Ahmad Bradshaw.

Durability looms as the major concern with Bradshaw, who has had foot issues.

Fullback: Mike Cox.

Cox started 12 games in the last two seasons for Atlanta.

Wide receiver: Brandon Lloyd, Julian Edelman.

Lloyd would be a fine short-term solution for a team looking for an outside receiver. Edelman’s youth and versatility give him a slight nod over other candidates for this spot, but can he stay healthy in a regular role?

Tight end: Dallas Clark.

The best receiving option at his position still left on the market. However, he turns 34 in June.

Offensive tackle: Andre Smith, Bryant McKinnie.

Smith has a strong 2012 season but comes with injury and consistency risk. Nevertheless, the young right tackle is the best free agent available. McKinnie gets the nod over Tyson Clabo and Eric Winston on account of his long track record at left tackle. That said, McKinnie will be 34 in September, and his conditioning can be an issue.

Offensive guard: Brandon Moore, Stephen Peterman.

Moore started 137 connective games for the Jets, while Peterman played every game the last three seasons before being released by the Lions. Both can be serviceable for 2013.

Center: Dan Koppen.

Started 12 games for the AFC West-winning Broncos in 2012. Turns 34 in September.

Defensive end: Dwight Freeney, John Abraham.

They are both pass-rushing aces, but they’re on the wrong side of 30.

Defensive tackle: Sedrick Ellis, Richard Seymour.

Ellis never lived up to his first-round status in New Orleans, but he will only be 28 at the start of the season. Seymour could still help a team, but Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported in March that it might take a lucrative deal to get the longtime standout lineman back onto the field in 2013.

Outside linebacker: Shaun Phillips, Daryl Smith.

Phillips will be 32 in May, but he notched 9.5 sacks in 2012, so it’s not as if he couldn’t be of assistance to a defense that uses 3-4 looks. Smith was limited to two games a season ago with a groin injury, but he’s the best 4-3 outside linebacker available. Age could also be a concern with Smith, who turned 31 in March. Let’s also mention James Harrison, like Phillips an interesting short-term option for a club employing a “30” front.

Inside linebacker: Karlos Dansby, Brian Urlacher.

Dansby lost his job when the Dolphins added Dannell Ellerbe, but he comes off a 134-tackle season and has a long track record of success. There’s probably still a place for him in the league, and the Bengals are meeting with him on Wednesday. Urlacher fit best in Chicago, but the door seems to have closed on his return. Besides, he’ll be 35 in May. Honorable mention goes to Nick Barnett, who has notched more than 100 tackles in every season in which he’s played even close to 16 games.

Cornerback: Antoine Winfield, Quentin Jammer.

Winfield is reportedly getting a good deal of attention in free agency; the ex-Viking is tough and skilled. Reliability and availability are Jammer’s strengths at this stage of the game. He’s made 161 career starts and missed just four games in 11 NFL seasons, all with San Diego.

Safety: Kerry Rhodes, Charles Woodson.

This position was thinned further Tuesday when Dawan Landry agreed with the Jets. Rhodes, who intercepted four passes a season ago, has shown a playmaking flair throughout his career, but he will be 31 this season. Woodson can play multiple secondary spots but has said his phone isn’t exactly ringing off the hook just yet.

Placekicker: Steven Hauschka.

Only 27 years old, Hauschka connected on 24-of-27 field goals in 2012 for Seattle.

Punter: Brian Moorman.

Bounced back in 2012 stint with Cowboys, posting a 38.9-yard net average in 12 games.

Return specialist: Josh Cribbs.

Cribbs, who had knee surgery earlier in the offseason, can be a difference-making returner and coverage player.

nope. eman is very simialar to amandola and edleman. i cant remember one time eman lined up outside the numbers. hes got 1300 yards and 5 tds in 3 years. thats like 400 yards/season and 1.5 tds. and its not because he wasnt on the field. he was the slot receiver everytime stillers lined up 3 wide.

show him this

ehh when a top 10 pick is off the team in 3 years that normally isnt a good sign.  and the ravens lost all their leaders in ray lewis, reed, pollard, kruger to keep him from getting in trouble.  in other more important news, this is from pft:

Eagles WR DeSean Jackson’s punt return touchdown against the Giants was voted the greatest play in NFL history, apparently by people who have never heard of the Immaculate Reception.

in honor of nicks fav show the top 100 players in the NFL (2013) here is my prediction for the top 10.  please remember this is not my top 10, but how i think the nfl players will vote based off the past 2 years which normally is very qb heavy and almost completly ignores the oline:

10. Ngata

9. Ware

8. Breese

7. Willis

6. Calvin Johnson

5. Watt

4. Manning

3. Brady

2. AP

1. rodgers

ngata is no where near the top 10. did he even make the pro bowl last year? wouldnt put brees or ware that high either. weird list.

3rd. he hasnt really done much so far but hes a good slot receiver and without wallace it would be nice to have another young guy with knowledge of the playbook.

on the otherhand, this dradft is loaded with WR and I think we can find a better one in the draft. if eman had a good season im not sure they would pay up to keep him and if we can get an improvement with the comp pick to play for 5 years under a rookie salary thats def a plus.

Yeah I'd take that 3rd and thank the Patriots for it. Eman hasn't proven himself to be any better than a replacement level player at this point. Might as well dig deep and see if you can't find a Mario Manningham type 3rd round gem.

ngata was 9 last year and is still considered the best dt in football and yes he did make the pro bowl even though he was injured.  breese was 2 last year and ware was 6.  u think they both fall out of the top 10?

I bet you Ware falls out. Brees will still be there. Remember at that point Ware was challenging for the sack record I believe.

I just hope Aldon Smith doesn't get a high ranking. He was a total product of playing behind Justin Smith. I loved that when Smith got hurt all the sudden Aldon's sacks mysteriously stopped! And all the sports anchors/journalists couldn't figure out why. So dumb,

i put aldon smith and von miller over ware at this point.

brees might make it because hes brees but he had a pretty bad season last year. remember its best players of 2013 not past production like the pro bowl is.

The same team who steals Jake Ballard from the Giants even after having Gronk/Hernandez/Hoomanuwani/Shiancoe et al. on the roster. Scum organization.

You're forgetting Brees setting the consecutive games w/ a TD streak... That alone will get him top 10

breese def will be in the top 10, i think he gets a pass with payton not being there.  qb's always are listed higher on the list, watch flacco go in the top 20.

von miller will be interesting i forgot about him, but i still think ware will be higher.  these are the same players who had ray lewis and ed reed in the top 5 2 years ago and the top 20 last year so some star veterns get overrated on these lists.

3rd rounder for eman for a 1 year deal is crazy and there has to be more to the story.  pats dont just give away draft picks like this.

either theyre all in this seaon (which i doubt since brady has more years left) or they have some kind of agreement in place that they will extend him and only wanted to make a 1 year offer steelers wont match which sounds illegal.

just reported edelman will re-sign.  i was surprised he was still avaiable.  but even with him pats wr's are him, amendola, jenkins and possibly eman.  no deep threat which has been hurting them the past few years in the playoffs

heated debate in my office.  we have a pats fan who now says his team will be loaded at wr if they get eman because their deep threat issues will be gone.  i countered by saying eman is no deep threat, he is a decent slot wr and the pats are still going to struggle vs teams who pound their slot wr and can't stretch the field (vs pats and giants past 2 playoff losses).  please settle this, do u consider eman a deep threat wr?

I just don't think that it's a loaded receiving corps. either way.

Amendola, Jenkins, Edelman, Sanders(assuming the steelers don't match). That's pretty ****ty if you ask me... Looks like it'll be the Gronk n Aaron show again next year.

Amendola = 6 games if your lucky

Jenkins = hip replacement surgery

Edelman = meh, could surprise.

Sanders = 600 yards and 3 tds.

not too much to fear there.
