So your boy almost died yesterday, i'm luckily to even be able to tell you this story. ok that is being a little dramatic, but i was in some deep trouble last night. basically i was driving home from work and it went from "not raining" to "tropical typhoon" in about 15 seconds. i was on 95 n the rain was coming down so hard that i had my windshield wipers on full blast and it was still difficult to see (most ppl even had their hazards on). anyway, that was when my battery light flashed on. not knowing what to do and not being able to pull over because of how hard it was raining and not wanting to be stuck on the side of the highway in that rain storm i decided to just drive until i hopefully made it home. about 5 more minutes into the drive my steering wheel tightens up on me to the point where it was difficult to turn the wheel more than an inch. im starting to freak out a little but keep going until i got to my exit off the highway. that is when my radio starts flashing on and off and my car is literally shutting down on me on the ramp getting off 95, in the downpouring rain where i still can barley see out of the windshield. luckily there was a gas station about 2 streets down off the ramp and as my windshield wipers start to shut off i pull my car under the gas pump right as my car shuts down on me. crisis avoided, but if i was literally 1-2 minutes delayed at any point in my drive home i could have been stuck on the 95 highway in a down pour of rain. not a fun tuesday after a 3 day weekend for your boy.
anyway, so i got my car towed to the local goodyear by my house and they did some work on it and found the timing belt feel off and ****ed up a lot of other things inside my car. guess thats what happens what u have 120k of milage, the thing starts to break down. if your still reading at this point, the goodyear guy said my repairs will costs my about $1200 which got me thinking, is it time to upgrade cars? my acura has been great and has lasted me over 10 years so it might be time. my mom's friend in NJ is turning in his BMW. it is a 2011 328i xdrive for like 30k. since i know next to nothing about cars, i have a two part question:
personally i wouldnt pay 30k for a car cause im not really into them especailly living in the city but for that one its not a bad price (bluebook has them listed 26-32)
the hyundais are ****ing sick.
whatever you do, if youre gonna drop 30k just make sure you do plenty of research and find something you really like. thats a ton of money for a car, mine was 19, so make sure you do everything (test drive, carfax, mainteance history, etc). you can get a really nice brand new car for 30k or a really nice used car for a lot less.
ya i'm the same way with cars as you can tell since ive been driving the same one for 10 years now so im not sure if im ready to do this either. i def wouldnt put up 30k at once, prolly like 10-15 and the rest a car loan. i've heard the same things about BMW, its a rough car to have in the city and the maintaince is really expensive. i'm prolly about 6 months away from making a move unless my car really starts breaking down on me. $1,200 for a one time thing is fine i guess, but if this **** starts happening every few months thats when i'll make the upgrade
I've really debated this decision for awhile now as I know its time to get a new car as mine is almost 15 years old, very beat up/worn down and will not pass an emissions test and there is no point in spending more $ for a sensor and delay this by another year or 2 until the next test. I'm kinda nervous getting a new car as I know if I scrape something while parking or there is minor damage if I leave it on the street I am going to be pissed where right now I could care less. I am also going from a tiny acura rsx to a pretty large car in the buick so I know it's going to take time to get use it to. I am also going to miss not having a car payment, but at the same time i am pretty excited to have a new car and not be embarrassed by what i am driving and actually enjoy it. what do you guys think, does it make sense to drop 40k-45k on a brand new car or do you think that is too much for someone who isn't that into cars?
IMO, I literally (2 months ago) leased a Kia Sportage SX Turbo, the thing is very inexpensive and LOADED with amenities and features. Idk if a SUV is in your plans, but I love the car so far and recommend it highly. This is coming from someone who had a BMW 128i before this and I like the Kia better!
When I say loaded; Telescoping Moonroof Air conditioned Seats (yes the seats shoot cold air at your butt) heated seats heated steering wheel 4 cylinder turbo engine Built in GPS Leather seats auto lift gate Auto start (xtra but worth it) etc etc etc
go for it. youve been talking about it for a while. i still drive my POS civic but thats only because im saving up to buy a place in DC.
you might want to check cars.com to see if you can find any gently used '17s. driving off the lot depreciates the value like $10 grand so finding one with even a couple though miles can save you a couple thousand dollars, including test drive cars. just a thought.
yeah I have been talking about a new car for awhile and I keep finding an excuse not to do it haha. the one side of me is thinking I don't care enough about cars to spend this kinda money on it, I don't have a car payment right now which is nice, if something happens to it I don't care such parking scratches, and most importantly my car has been reliable and in 10 years of having this acura I've never had a major issue with it where I had to put it in the shop for a long period of time which is a pain in the ass. however, on the other hand I'm thinking that it is way past time for a new car, I am 30 years old making good money and I look like I am in HS driving my parents old car around haha.
like I said, this time around I am def getting a new car within the month as my acura is starting to fall apart and it did not pass emissions test and i will not pay for repairs to get it fixed like I did a year or 2 ago. I am almost 100% sure I am going with the new buick, just having a hard time pulling the trigger. I thought it would come in the high 30's- low 40s and the initial price I was quoted was 46k. I wouldn't mind a "gently used" car to get the price down a little but I am also being stubborn about certain things I want (color, interior, 20 inch rims, etc) so its hard to find that perfect match unless I get it brand new. I figure if I am spending this kind of money on it I might as well get exactly what I want and not try to save 3k-5k but I am in the negotiating stage so we will see what happens!
yeah man not bad for a 14 year old car with 165k miles on it, with major dents on both sides of the car plus scrapped up fenders, the right door doesn't lock with the key anymore, the trunk doesn't lock in general so anyone can get inside if they knew about it and oh by the way it didn't pass emissions so the car registration will be suspended next month! so yeah I was more than happy to walk away with $1,300 for it. I think that number was more for negotiating down the price on the new car as there is not much of a difference for a brand new car with the features I wanted so that is what they do for you.
