its a good theory and all, but what if seattle drafted matt barkley instead of wilson do you think they are still super bowl contenders? one mistake like that and instead of having a dominate team for 3 years with a cheap qb you have a team with wasted talent and then you have to start paying those guys (sherman, earl thomas, etc) and look for a new qb on top of that.
just think about the steelers, would you trade big ben for say just one 1st rounder? i bet you wouldnt and hes on the downhill of his career.
i wouldnt, but the steelers havent had the luxury of the $100m in cap space hes used up over the past 6 years. if they had that space and a cheap qb im sure the talent around him would be better and they could have kept guys like keenan lewis and mike wallace just to name a few.
eagles will be in this situation soon. how much is too much for foles? is losing mccoy and djax worth it? not saying those are the guys they would lose but theyre comparable to lewis and wallace
also, not sure if you saw this from the previous page. responded to the djax report too
so i posed a question a while back which was answerd by john clayton in is mailbag. short version: with teams such as SF/sea/etc. winning with low paid QBs and high priced talet around them, will we see a day where the QB is interchangable, ie drafted every 4 years and allowed to walk, to preserve a winnig team around him.
this was shot down by the professor, as well as fish, because its so hard to find a franchise Qb. fair enough. but where do you draw the line? i think we found our answer:
“Do you have a high-priced quarterback and less elsewhere or do you try to have as many guys as you can have and maybe a quarterback that is young and not so highly paid? Seattle, for example of that. In fact, you look at the statistics it is rather surprising how few quarterbacks that are old in recent years — saying over 30 — have won the Super Bowl. They’ve gotten there but they haven’t won it. I don’t know is that better formula to go with a younger guy and spread the money around?"
Mike Brown on Andy Dalton
i still think its possible to build a great playoff team and have somewhat of a revolving door at QB. obviously there are exceptions like manning, brady, brees, rodgers but i dont think russell wilson, kaep, dalton, flacco, etc would be as good if they were on teams like the jags, browns, or even those teams with amazing talet at qb and nothing else like the pats.
however, its working for the hawks, 9ers, bengals and (sometimes) ravens... i could see teams trying this. bengals may be the first
i just think its so hard to consistently find a good qb that when you find one, you gotta pay to keep him around. this is definitly going to be an interesting year for foles, if he has another pro bowl year he will make himself a lot of money but if he goes back to normal (an average 3rd round qb prospect) i could def see chip trying to draft a more mobile qb next year.
about djax, the whole thing is confusing. the main thing i dont get is this is coming out of nowhere. he had a career year and is in year 2 of a 5 year deal. its not like he got arrestted or is all of a sudden acting any differently than he has the past 5 years with us, there has to more to this story than what is being reported whether its trying to drum up value for a player they think is replacable with maclin coming back or if he is more of a pain in the ass than anyone realizes.
plus isnt maclin on a 1 year deal? after dumping avant and if they get rid of djax that leaves only kkkoper on the roster next season. that looks familiar to a steelers fan thank god for AB
if they trade djax there is a 100% chance they're drafting a wr in may. plus is maclin has a monster year they will obviously look to re-sign him long term after next season or at worst tag him
from the same reporter who reported last week desean had less than 5% chance of returning to philly next year is now reporting that jackson is most likley back with the eagles next year haha. like i said yesterday, do not believe a thing with this story until something actually happens.
but for todays news, jackson posted a pic of chip kelly and said they had a talk and things went well and then today he is telling his teammates he is coming back next season. stay tuned...
at $144m of dedicated salary does that put the eagles in the worst cap situation of any team in the league next season? i think so. OUCH! Steelers on the other hand currently have only 94m on the books. with the cap expected to by 140m, the eagles are already 4m OVER. it doesnt count the dead money but with only 5m steelers have about $41m to spend. but their cap situation is soooo bad!!
i think we found why theyre trying to get djax 10m salary off the books
haha talking 2015 cap before 2014 rosters are even set, thats a stretch. not sure how accurate this is, its over a year away but looks right. regardless, lets say it is, the major reason eagles are on top of the list is probably because they only have a few potential FA's who even touch the filed. When every single starter is locked up through next year other than maclin and 1 or 2 guys on defense that will probably be replaced by someone in this years draft it makes sense they don't have a ton of room to work with. again, its a year away so its way too early to be given anaylsis on this, but i can tell you already trent cole will either be cut or have his deal redone after next year (10 mil), same with cary williams (6.5), same with ryans (6.8), brent celek (5), 3rd string TE james casey (4), and brandon graham (1.5) and all have min. prorated bonuses (see website below, 2nd section). that means if they get cut there is no cap hit or dead money so thats 30-35 million right there to work with. like i said, way too early to even think about this. and oh ya, the cap is probably going up again after the season anyway.
another NFL owner just died, bills ralph wilson. i heard in the past wilson wasnt leaving the team to anyone in his family which means another owner will eventually buy them. that leaves the door open for them to move, LA maybe?
this is going to be dependant on the new owner obviously. portland would be interesting because its a big market and would make for a nice rivailry for the seahawks, but not sure a new owner would move them to such a remote market unless he is from there (imagine a portland team being in the afc EAST haha). i think, stratch that, know, the NFL wants a team in london eventually but not sure the league is ready for that just yet. maybe in 5-10 years from now and if the new owner has an european soccer background (bucs and rams owner both own teams there) then maybe they go from buffalo to england in a few years and that would work. but my guess is an owner buys them with the intention of moving to LA which is easily the biggest market right now (2nd in the country + without a team) for a new owner to make some serious money.
in the past i've also read about Las Vegas or OKC being options. Vegas would be awesome but for gambling purposes i dont think the NFL ever lets that happens. You would think OKC would make sense seeing how the city supports the Thunder and 2 big college teams with huge football programs so maybe thats the 2nd best option right now.
La Canfora reported today that the Dolphins have renewed their attempts to trade Wallace during the league meetings, and that some interested teams are doing their homework on Wallace. La Canfora even floats the possibility of a trade between the Dolphins and Eagles, sending DeSean Jackson to Miami and Wallace to Philadelphia.
whaaaaat. dont believe this for a second. wallace has no better of an attutude than djax and cost 5 mill more.
so my brothers works for WIP radio station in philly which broadcasts all of the professional philly sport teams and games with eagles being their go-to. they have a lot of former players who work for them, as well as the reporters including the guy i hate the most, howard eskin. anyway, my brother was talking to one of the former players today who is still plugged in and was told "off the record" that djax was as good as gone. he didnt get into too many specfics but supposly this dates back to when he was robbed a few months ago and there are some rumors that some shady **** happened. this former player/radio host thinks the eagles want to wash their hands of djax before something major happens. he also said the fact avant and vick (2 of the guys desean actually listened to) are both no longer here really scares the front office.
again, this might just be rumors but it does make sense on a potential reason as to why they would all of a sudden want to trade jackson. im still hoping he stays put but i guess we'll see what happens.
do i even need to put in writing how stoked i would be if stillers signed blount? dude is a pycho beast (new term). im traveling to charlottesville today someone text me when its official!
let me start by saying i am not happy about todays news. obviously the eagles have been wanting to get rid of him all offseason and no team was willing to trade him with his current contract. it is clear now why they cut him after this article from nj.com came out today:
with the whole aaron hernadez situation last year being involved with gangs this is now a more serious issue than ever before. the herndez case is a bit extreme in regards to desean but i guess chip does not want to deal with his personaltiy and the culture it would create in the locker room with a bunch of young players. i guess eagles are following the pats model where they cut hernadez and didnt miss a beat and still went to the AFCC game without him.
on paper this does not look good for on field production but if maclin comes back healthy its not a huge drop off esp in chip kellys scheme. eagles have said in the past WR is the deepest position in this years draft so expect them to draft one in the 3rd round or eariler. hopefully those 2 factors are enough to keep them in contention for the NFC, but lets be serious here WR rarley makes a huge difference in terms of getting to the super bowl (see seattle) it really is going to depend on how foles develops in year 3.
Personally, the DeSean to Washington deal doesn't bother me. Washington is the Mets of the NFL no matter how good something looks on paper, it's going to back fire and end horribly. This will not end well for both DeSean and Washington, that franchise is quite possibly more dysfunctional than the Mets to boot too (tough to do), 0 concern.

i some what agree. i dont think it closes the gap on them vs us for the division (7 game gap last year), they were a 3-13 team last year and now they have a complelty new coaching staff plus no 1st round pick. they're not gonna be contenders until they 1. adjust to a new coaching staff and more importantly 2. fix the d. however, its hard to go aganist the fact that the offense has a chance to be very good. 2 good wr, a good te and a rb plus RG3 has a lot of potential esp with a good offensive coach like jay gruden. guess we'll see what happens, but i could also see this backfiring as well with RG3 forcing deep balls to desean and throwing more picks, and I could easily see another 6-10 season for them and a lot of frustration from their fans with this false hope. it happens every year with them after a big FA signing. i think they are closer to 6-10 this year than 10-6.
as for the eagles, unless someone on philly gets hurt (like maclin or cooper) this move isnt going to hurt philly like people think, it just sucks cuz its making redskins better.
Yeah, Bortles. Yeah, Manziel. But the Texans lucked into J.J. Watt when a pair of teams from their own division took Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert three years ago. That lesson should not be lost on the Texans. Especially with Jacksonville on the clock two picks later.
If they’re going to stick with Sam Bradford at quarterback, they need to give him another weapon. The fact that they seem to be downplaying it serves only to make it more likely.
The flirtation with center Alex Mack suggests that the Jags are willing to take chances. Manziel fits with Jedd Fisch’s creative offensive approach and, more importantly, Manziel will make the Jaguars into a marquee team. If he’s successful. If he’s not, they’ll get another crack at another quarterback soon enough.
Should Carr go that high? No. Should the Browns screw around if they think they’ve found the guy who can run Kyle Shanahan’s offense the way Shanahan wants? Hell no.
Yes, they signed Donald Penn to presumably play left tackle. But they’ll find a spot for both guys as they try to open running lanes and keep Matt Schaub in one piece.
Receiver becomes less of a need with Golden Tate in the fold. With the Lions not exercising the fifth-year option on Nick Fairley as a motivational tool and with Ndamukong Suh still carrying a $22 million-plus cap number, they need a fresh face at the position.
The Titans have done a good job of keeping their cards close to the vest regarding the need for a quarterback. As May approaches, it’s becoming more obvious that they need to take a chance on someone, three years after they took a chance on Jake Locker.
Given the departures of Justin Tuck and Linval Joseph, the Giants need to restore some bite to a defensive line that didn’t necessarily carry them to a pair of Super Bowl appearances, but helped deliver victory once they got there.
13. Rams: Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix, safety, Alabama.
Keeping Rodger Saffold allows the Rams to address the last line of defense.
And here’s why the Jets ultimately didn’t pursue DeSean Jackson. Ebron could become a game-changer in the slot — and he has the charisma to take over the nation’s top media market.
Shazier ran a blazing 4.36-second 40-yard dash with a bad hamstring. Adding him would require some shuffling of the linebackers, since Shazier is suited to the weak side. Given his talents and Vontaze Burfict’s versatility, that’s a good problem to have.
He says he’s better than DeSean Jackson. The weapons-challenged Philip Rivers will settle for just as good.
26. Browns (from Colts): Trai Turner, guard, LSU.
A surprisingly meat-and-potatoes offseason continues for a team that has lost guard Shawn Lauvao and could lose center Alex Mack, this year or maybe next year.
It’s not a glaring area of need but it’s good value for the slot. Plus, it never hurts to have enough guys to keep Tom Brady healthy in the final years of his career.
30. 49ers: Kyle Fuller, cornerback, Virginia Tech.
The lone area of weakness on the team gets addressed. As it should.
With Chris Clemons and Red Bryant gone and Jared Allen picking the Bears, the Seahawks need to feed the unit that was critical to the team’s success in 2013.
PFT's mock normally isnt very good but this one wasn't bad. i say that because i think they had RG3 over luck a few years ago even though the colts were basically printing out andrew luck jerseys and ready to sell them on draft day but whatever. although i would disagree with the move, i could definitly see eagles going corner over saftey even if prior is still avaiable like this scenario suggests.
the only thing that was really surprising was carr top 5? i thought some people had him in round 2?
seems like carr is rising like crazy. the best thing for all of us is if 4 QBs go top 10 because that means others are moving down. i could see the browns going BPA at 5 then taking carr with their second first rounder at 26. no way carr gets out of the first round.
djax put a picutre on instagram from an article where mccoy said he was surprised djax was cut. djax took this as mccoy was the only real n***a on the team and the only one to keep it real and his only boy and went on and on about how he was the only person to tell the truth...
the way i see it more people kept it real when they came out and said djax was a cancer to the team. apparently he was skipping meetings and snapping at chip and all sorts of MeSean things. theres a reason he was cut and he acts like he did noting wrong. im all about talking the talk when you walk the walk but djax seems like a real POS
ya i saw that as well and also read the article (i think i posted it a few weeks ago). i read another report that desean skipped his exit interview with chip and was the only person on the team to do that.
it def is more of a telling sign that only 1 player (mccoy) came to his side and all mccoy really said was they'll miss him on the field which is obvious. everyone knew things had to be bad in the locker room just to what degree was the question cuz you dont cut a guy who is in year 3 of 5 in his contract and just had a career year. let's see what happens with him on the skins if (when) they start losing.
next big name player to go: aldon smith. what the hell is this dude thinking saying he had a bomb in an airport? was he drunk again?
hes an idiot as well. get drunk at 5 am on the way to a team meeting... check. get caught with a loaded firearm... check. catch a terrosism conspiracy charge... check.
this one could be the most punishable. if hes put on the no fly list he would have to drive himself to all the away games LMAO
russell wilson filed for divorse but just when you think he cant turn a bad situation into a good one just remember this...he filed it while still on a rookie contract haha.
man after reading this article if steelers miss the playoff for the 3rd straight some major changes need to be made. NFL is giving them a cakewalk to the playoffs!
NON-PLAYOFF TEAM THAT HAS A CHIEFS-LIKE PATH BACK TO PLAYOFFS Pittsburgh Steelers
(Getty Images)
The Steelers’ schedule isn’t as friendly as Kansas City’s last year, because that was a perfect storm, but it’s certainly one that makes you feel like Pittsburgh could improve on last year’s 8-8 mark and get back to the postseason.
The Steelers’ toughest non-division opponents come to Pittsburgh: Indianapolis, Kansas City, New Orleans and what should be an improved Tampa Bay team. The Steelers’ non-division road games are against the Jaguars, Titans, Jets, Falcons and Panthers. If the Panthers take a step back, as it looks like they might, there’s not a game in that group the Steelers can’t win.
The stretch in which Pittsburgh should be able to get on a roll starts on Oct. 5, in Week 5, and goes through its bye. The stretch is games at Jacksonville, at Cleveland, vs. Houston, vs. Indianapolis, vs. Baltimore, at N.Y. Jets and at Tennessee. The Steelers will need to be sitting pretty after that, because of those seven games they should be favored in at least five and maybe all seven.
If the Steelers can play well at home against the tough opponents and handle business on the road against the teams they should beat, don’t be surprised if the Steelers are back on top of the AFC North this year.
fish you know just as well as anyone that what a schedule looks like in april doesnt mean **** when it comes to september.
also, their last 5 are saints, bengals x2, cheifs and flacons. 4 of those 5 games are agianst playoff teams
whatever, ill take an easy schedule. i just want football back. this extra time before the draft is ridiculous. the draft would have started tonight if it was on the normal scheudle....... dammit
eagles have a rough schedule. last 5 games are vs all division teams plus seattle. injuries are what really determine how tough a schedule is but division games are always tough unless a team has quit on their coach at the end of the year.
i do like that the eagles are playing at dallas on thanksgiving. its the one thursday game where players actually get up for it being that it is on such a big day. i dont think i was born yet when the eagles last played dallas on thanksgiving and i already told cathy the outside family is either not coming over on thursday or were eating dinner in the family room haha.
they played the cardinals in the night game. i was actually there, i think it was 2008 so great memory. i was talking dallas specficlly, that is the prime time event, back in 2008 those night thanksgiving games were still only on NFL Network.
