haha i guess we will see what happens. look I think he was a great college rb but based on the combine numbers I see him putting up I don't see him being a featured back and if you're not a featured back you shouldn't be drafted in the 1st round that's all im saying. if he gets drafted by a team that will use him like the pats used woodhead, then I think he can be pretty good in that role. another thing that makes me worried about him is the fact standford's running game is so good that people see his huge numbers and get excited about that but in realty his back up last season ran for almost 800 yards and had a better yards per attempt than McCaffrey at 7.0 and then throw in guys in the past like toby gerhart and stepfan taylor who both also put up similar numbers but then didn't make it in the NFL and it has me worried its going to be the same thing with him.
and also he's white. other than a rare season here or there from someone like peyton hillis I've never seen a white RB become a lead feature back and be successful at it for a sustained period of time. maybe he'll be the first, but i'll stick to the side of history that he won't.
Kiper: Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State | Watch highlights Conley, another riser after the combine, is the veteran of the three Buckeyes defensive backs I have going in the top 14 picks. Philadelphia let Nolan Carroll II walk in free agency after he started 16 games last season, and the Eagles brought in former first-round pick Patrick Robinson on a one-year deal to compete at corner. Coordinator Jim Schwartz's defense is thin on the boundaries.
McShay: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford | Watch highlights I love this fit. Darren Sproles turns 34 in June, and Philly needs a versatile playmaker out of the backfield. McCaffrey has the skill set to be a really good running back and wide receiver in the NFL. He showed tremendous short-area quickness at the combine (6.57-second three cone), which is readily apparent when watching McCaffrey's route-running.
Kiper: Jarrad Davis, LB, Florida | Watch highlights An ankle injury kept Davis out of workouts at the combine, but he had a spectacular pro day, running a 4.56 40 with a 38½-inch vertical. Kelvin Sheppard started 11 games at middle linebacker for the Giants last season, but he's a free agent, while 2016 first-round pick B.J. Goodson only played 14 snaps. The versatile Davis, my No. 2 inside linebacker, would slot in on Day 1.
McShay: Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State | Watch highlights McDowell is the most talented interior pass rusher in the draft, but he didn't play with the same passion and toughness this past season, which is a red flag. The veterans along the Giants' defensive line can show him how to be a pro.
Kiper: Derek Barnett, OLB, Tennessee | Watch highlights Since Barnett is available at No. 30 in this mock, I'm switching from Houston's Tyus Bowser to Barnett, who was one of the most productive pass-rushers over the past three years (33 sacks). He fits the Steelers' physical 3-4.
McShay: John Ross, WR, Washington | Watch highlights With Martavis Bryant's suspension still in place (for now), the Steelers could very well be in the market for a speedy wide receiver to play opposite Antonio Brown come April. Ross broke the modern combine record with a 4.22 40. He has savvy route-running ability and reliable hands and will contribute as a returner.
Kiper: Curtis Samuel, RB/WR, Ohio State | Watch highlights Carson Wentz has already gotten two new receivers in free agency (Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith), but he still lacks weapons. Samuel is a tweener. He's not an every-down back, and he's not big enough to be a full-time receiver (74 catches and 97 rushes last season). So the Eagles could use the electric Samuel in a Darren Sproles-type role -- just get him the ball in space.
McShay: Jourdan Lewis, CB, Michigan | Watch highlights Kiper gave the Eagles a cornerback in Round 1 (Gareon Conley), but they could wait until Day 2 to upgrade their secondary, given the depth of this class at cornerback. Teams will have to investigate Lewis recently being charged with domestic violence. He has natural cover skills, but off-field concerns and sub-optimal size (5-10¼, 188) could cause him to slide.
Kiper: Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma Perine is one of the toughest running backs I've seen in a while, and he'd be a great complementary pounder (5-11, 233) to Paul Perkins, whom the Giants took in the fifth round last year. Perine had 49 touchdown runs in three seasons for the Sooners.
McShay: Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma I agree with everything Mel said. Perine made a habit of plowing through arm tackles at Oklahoma, and he'd take the pressure off Perkins to carry the load in New York's backfield.
Kiper: Chris Wormley, DT, Michigan Wormley is only the third defensive tackle I have going in the first two rounds. He had 12.5 sacks for the Wolverines the past two seasons, and he has tremendous size at 6-5, 298.
McShay: Derek Rivers, DE/OLB, Youngstown State Rivers dominated small-school competition the past three seasons, with 160 total tackles, 52 tackles for loss and 38 sacks. After he weighed in at 248 pounds and posted top-five marks among defensive linemen in the 40-yard dash (4.61), bench press (30), vertical jump (35 inches) and three-cone drill (6.94), it's clear Rivers could make the transition to a 3-4 OLB in the pros.
Wonder if Zach Cunningham was gone, he'd be my choice over Davis.... Love Samaje in the second though
Do not want McDowell all you hear is questions regarding his love for the game and motivation, last thing I want is a 300 lb guy who doesnt love what he does.
McShay had Cunningham in the 2nd round to Buffalo at 44 and Kiper didn't have him drafted in either round. I just emailed this to you so check it out, it's just too long to post on this form. Some other interesting notes I took from this:
- UPDATED QB's: Kipers now has 4 QB's in the 1st round and 3 from picks 6-13 including Patrick mahomes who apparently is the new hot name. mcshay has 3 but #4 to the browns 1st pick 2 round so hes right there with kiper. mcshay has a lot of weird picks with the chargers taking Watson at 7 and the saints with mahomes at 32. I get these teams will eventually need a QB but I don't think spending a 1st rounder now makes much sense when they have franchise qb who can play for at least 2-3 more years but we'll see.
- speaking of qb's, how does nobody have the Texans taking one in round 1?? with everyone assuming romo was going to get traded there I think they go QB in round 1 esp if one of the top 3 guys drop. they cant go into the season with this much talent and tom savage as their starter and expect to do anything.
- they both of peppers late 1st round and I actually heard a podcast with mike Lombardi who thinks there is no chance he will be drafted in the 1st round as he doesn't really have a position. according to him, peppers is not an outside corner and hes not really a safety and he said you basically need to build your D around him to be successful and he doesn't think peppers is good enough to do that for and expects him to fall into the 2nd round.
- kiper has mixon going 1st pick 2nd round to the browns and mcshay doesn't have him in either round. I could seriously see the eagles going with him in round 2 as they need a RB and he is a talented as any of them in the draft. eagles owner Jeffrey lurie was asked about him at the owners meetings last week and he basically said he was NOT off their draft board. he also has a history of giving guys a 2nd chance (see mike vick) and Howie roseman has been taking more chances on guys in the draft with a bit of character concerns so I could see him making a move to get him. but that's if he even falls to the middle of middle of the 2nd round which seems to be 50/50 right now.
Kiper believes that Howard, the coveted Alabama tight end and McCaffrey, the jack-of-all-trades Stanford running back, won’t be available to the Giants.
Howard, the way Kiper sees the draft, is a likely top 10 pick. In his mock, Kiper had him going No. 10 to the Buffalo Bills.
“We haven’t seen tight ends over the last few years with this type of multi-dimensional talent. You saw these tight ends in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s,” Kiper said. “Now you have these glorified wide receivers who can’t block. He is an extension of your line. He will help your running game. A tight end that can block inline is a rarity these days.”
Kiper said McCaffrey could go as high as No. 8 to the Carolina Panthers, but doubts he would slide past the Washington Redskins at No. 17.
“He’s not going to be there in the late first. It’s just not going to happen right now,” Kiper said. “He’s more than a running back. … spectacular player.”
mccaffery is getting a ton of love. ive seen him moved ahead of cook in almost every mock and im drinking the coolaide.
love me some mixon too and i doubt he lasts long on day 2. i think eagles are becoming his floor as teams will see the talent too hard to pass up. I like the kid out of texas too, what a great RB class. i can se the steelers taking one in their top 4 picks (2 3rd rounders).
im out on peppers. someone cut a tape of him vs OLinemen and Ive never seen an NFL LB get pushed around like that. "playmaker" works in college but as a position in the pros.
im still huge on the 6'4 safety out of UConn whos name I cant pronouce. since reddick shot up boards I think thats who i want now.
Can't believe the draft is only a week away. Been so busy at my new job and with the Steelers picking 30 I really have no idea who's gonna be around. Everyone seems to be mocking peppers so I guess I'll get on board but I think my top 3 are still
Obi (safety from uconn)
TJ watt/rivers/bowser
Buddha baker/CB from Colorado/tre white
I would say at least 75% of the mocks I've seen have the eagles drafting a corner or freaking Christian mcCaffrey. I might have to start hedging on my hate for McCaffrey since there is a chance he might be an eagle next week but I'm hoping that is not the case. mel kiper had him #8 in his last mock and fournette dropping to 15 and if that happens I will freak the F out as he would be my #1 on the wish list. I still find it hard to believe he will fall out of the top 10 but you never know. I still hope eagles go with who ever the best corner available is (I've heard an ohio state corner is rising up the boards) but if fournette falls you cant pass up on that kind of talent.
yeah I read its cuz the NFL was a little more concerned about the ratings in their primetime games this season so they didn't even want to risk putting teams like these 2 in any primetime games.
I think all 3 of us would be happy with these results, moreso you guys, and while I like the pick of white for the eagles I would be PISSED if skins came away with fournette AND the giants came away with cook...
A few notes: Reuben Foster, David Njoku and Gareon Conley have all slipped out of the first round here. Also I still expect 2-3 QB's to be picked in the top 10, but it will involve trade ups and i don't mock trades

K-State
Fast riser leading up to today, they need someone else besides Vic Beasley who can get to the QB.
solid work as always. with that said, I would be SHOCKED if browns went trubisky at 1. I get what you are saying that there is a lot of rumors but I'm not buying it. their GM said they know who they have been picking for 2 weeks now and I heard another report saying they have been calling teams to trade up from 12 so I think that is what they do with all the extra picks they have. trubisky is not worth the #1 and I just dont see how they pass on garrett. other notes:
- so no more guarantee that 3 qbs in the top 10 anymore? I agree with your latest that only 1 go in the top 10.
- I like the kevin king pick and also agree it was looking like conley before the rape questions. sucks for him, it feels like an extortion case in a way being that this didn't come out until 2 days ago but I guess teams don't want to risk it is actually true. I read he is looking like a 3rd rounder now.
- nick would love that kizer pick at 30. and by love I mean absolutely hate it haha. I wouldn't be shocked if they drafted a qb in round 1 either but I don't think it will be kizer even tho he has the body of cam newton and mind of tom brady (in his eyes at least). my guess is hes a 3rd rounder as well.
- anyone down for some prop bets? I read an article on espn saying vegas did prop bets for the first time ever so I will post some the bets and we can play along
A few notes: Reuben Foster, David Njoku and Gareon Conley have all slipped out of the first round here. Also I still expect 2-3 QB's to be picked in the top 10, but it will involve trade ups and i don't mock trades
ah I missed that. I think foster is still a top 20 pick but agree on conley. here are some player props (under is less than. so if it is 12.5 then picks 1-12 is the under):
ugh I hate the idea of a QB this year. for one the draft class is weak as can be. for two, unless the steelers make the super bowl next year their first round pick couldn't get any worse. so regardless next year they should be in a better position (1-29).
Im in the mind of thinking that even if you have to suck for a year after ben to be in a better position to draft his replacement you put everything you can into making a run while bens here then worry about the qb later. obviously a QB is about the only position that doesnt help them win this year.
i get the thinking. but god i hope it doesn't happen.
to me, the browns won the first round. obviously thats easy to say when you have 3 first round picks and I know they have sucked for a long time but their plan may finally be coming together. hue jackson is a good coach. they got 3 of the best players at their position and didnt reach for a qb. the steelers would have been happy with any one of those guys and i think they knew what they were doing when they took peppers then traded back up one spot ahead of the steelers for njoku. now they have 2 ones and 2 twos next year to get their QB. as nfln said, they are building a solid team around the QB position then will drop a QB in last to make them good overnight. obviously its the browns and they didnt have much talent before but i thought they did good last night and still have a ton of picks. kurt cousins would immediately be a good fit.
bears paid too much to move up one spot. either they thought 9ers were trying to replace kaep/blaine or knew someone else was trying to trade up. they just paid glennon $40m and I dont see them as a glennon -> trubisky improvement away from anything.
thought the titans had a bad day. sure I like cory davis but they could have traded back and gotten him lower. their second pick was a glorified special teamer and an *ok* CB. should have done better with those picks.
couldnt be happier that the bengals took ross. i dont see as much in him as some ppl but 40 times always shoot guys up boards. dalton doesnt have the arm to the deep ball. i see djax as his ceiling and im ok with that.
nyg and eagles took solid players. nothing flashy like the UCLA guy but def got day one contributors.
im happy with the Watt pick. seemed like every mock draft done by steelers writers at least had him as a possibility so it was nothing surprising. i love the secondary talent still on the board so if they can pair him with a CB (king, baker or the dude from colorado) or a safety i think the first 2 rounds was a huge success. i would have probably preferred foster but with his injury history plus the diluted sample (the last thing the steelers need is another pot head) its safe to pass. now if watt can only be as good as his brother!
overall I was happy with the eagles draft. i'll be honest I wasn't 100% excited immediately after their 1st round pick of Barnett and I feel a lot of eagles fans feel the same way saying something along the lines of "solid but not exciting." after the run of qb/wrs in the top 12 that made a lot of big name players drop to the eagles that they weren't expecting such as jonathan allen and OJ howard and I kinda wanted the eagles to go with one of them so we'll see who has the better career a few years down the line. Barnett feels like another brandon graham kinda pick where hes not gonna have a monster numbers but he hopefully will become a steady starter and who knows maybe in jim Schwartz offense defense he can get into the double digit sack numbers one day. with young corners hopefully a pass rush of him, cox, jerrigan, graham and curry help them out and I've seen a lot of types go far into the playoffs with that formula (cough giants cough).
-I was NOT happy that the Vikings leaped the eagles and drafted dalvin cook ahead of them. eagles reports came out today and said that would have been the eagles pick and they even thought about trading up but didn't want to give up their extra pick. RB is now the eagles #1 concern as their current backs are either hurt and was planning on being cut in ryan Mathews or all 5'8 or smaller so I am not sure who they are giving the ball to on a 3rd and 1. this was supposedly a very deep RB draft and to come away with only 1 rb in the 4th or 5th round as a 5'8 Darren sproles wannabe that was disappointing.
- as for your comments about the browns, yeah it def looks good on paper but until they have a qb it doesn't mean much. I read an article on PFT that said they have turned the wentz pick into like 9 potential players which is impressive and it reminds me of what the 76ers did. with the sixers they were consistently trading players for future picks, or redshirting guys to become worse, and while it all looks great on paper, the sixers have been the worst team in the nba for like 3-4 straight years and there's still no guarantee this plan is going to work. same can be said with the browns, it looks amazing to have 3 first rounders this year and 5 in the next 2 rounds next, but if they don't ever get a qb then it might be another 3-4 years of being horrible and a new gm/head coach will be coming in to fix this and start all over and it was all for nothing.
- I hate that the skins got those 2 bama dlinmen, esp allen. the dude is a stud and cant believe he fell to them at 17. now I gotta listen to skins fans think their d is great for the next 4 months SMH.
After a few days of sitting on it here are my thoughts...
1)Evan Engram - If this guy had a WR instead of TE next to his name I think he would have been a top 10 pick. No he's not your standard edge setting TE, but thats not why he was drafted. He's been called a Mike Evans clone and I can see what they're talking about. This guy is going to be good, looking forward to getting him on the field.
2)Dalvin Tomlinson - The words "Alabama Defensive Player" are always okay in my book. His job will be to stop the run with snacks and he'll do it really really well.
3)Davis Webb - I like preparing for the future and they all say this guy is just as good of a prospect as Jared Goff was, if not better. Give him 3 years behind Eli and this might work out really well, if not then whatever it's just a 3rd round pick.
4)Wayne Gallman - Whenever I watched Clemson this year I marveled at how Gallman managed to get it done, period. Scoring TD's, catching the ball, getting necessary yardage, he got it done. Mayock compared him to Devonta Freeman, thats good company in my book.
I dont know anything about the guys past this so I have no comment.... All in all a solid B rated draft, like the talent we got.
you guys read peter king's mmqb yesterday? if not, it was pretty much all about his day with john lynch and the 49ers in their war room but I found a few things that were pretty interesting:
- even the 49ers had no idea the bears wanted trubisky even AS they were trading up to get him haha. it's crazy that fans and media members do months of research and hundreds of mock drafts and then by the 2nd pick even the team drafting has no idea what is going to happen. I think the draft may be more unpredictable than the NCAA march madness tourney.
- apparently the 49ers were going to draft reuben foster #3 overall if garrett and Thomas went 1-2. while I agree he has a chance to be really good, there is also a chance he could be a disaster with his character concerns and more importantly he might have a shoulder injury that could need surgery soon but at the end of the first round I think that is a risk worth taking as oppose to a top 3 pick.
